Performance pay or redistribution? Cultural differences in just-world beliefs and preferences for wage inequality

چکیده
We identify and test a specific psychological mechanism underlying cross-national differences in preferences for performance-based versus redistributive compensation systems. We posit that individuals’ beliefs in the inherent justness and deservedness of individual outcomes (i.e., just world beliefs: JWBs) can help explain individual and culture-level variation in preferences for these compensation systems. Study 1 demonstrates a general correlation between the JWBs of a culturally diverse sample of former managers and their preferences for performance versus equal pay for an individual task. Study 2 shows that American participants exhibit stronger preferences for individual performance pay versus redistributive pay than do French participants, a difference that is mediated by cultural differences in JWBs. Study 3 holds national culture constant and replicates these effects by experimentally manipulating JWBs, demonstrating the causal nature of JWBs in determining preferences for performance-based versus redistributive compensation systems. Implications for organizational incentive systems, culture, and work motivation are discussed. 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Subjective Evaluations of Wage Inequality and Preferences for Redistribution
This paper analyzes subjective evaluations of the wage distribution and preferences for redistribution using Swiss data from the International Social Survey Program. Preferences for redistribution are conceptualized and measured as the discrepancy between the perceived and the just level of wage inequality. The results suggest that there is both considerable support for equalisation of wages an...
متن کاملCapital-skill Complementarity and the Redistributive Effects of Social Security Reform
This paper analyses the general equilibrium implications of reforming pay-as-you-go pension systems in an economy with heterogeneous agents, human capital investment and capital-skill complementarity. It shows that increasing funding delivers in the long run higher physical and human capital and therefore higher output, but also higher wage and income inequality. The latter affects preferences ...
متن کاملPreferences for Redistribution
This paper discusses what determines the preferences of individuals for redistribution. We review the theoretical literature and provide a framework to incorporate various effects previously studied separately in the literature. We then examine empirical evidence for the US, using the General Social Survey, and for a large set of countries, using the World Values Survey. The paper reviews previ...

In the Eye of the Beholder: Subjective Inequality Measures and the Demand for Redistribution This paper presents a simple conceptual framework intended for describing individuals' subjective evaluations of occupational wage inequality and their demand for redistribution. Most importantly, the framework explicitly allows for the distinction between individuals' perceptions and their normative be...
متن کاملInequality and Relative Ability Beliefs∗
In this study I construct a novel explanation for inequality persistence and then present supporting evidence from two separate experiments. Building on Just World Beliefs research (Lerner, 1965), I hypothesize that individuals tend to believe they merit the unequal treatment they experience. Because a component of merit is ability, being disadvantaged (advantaged) by inequality may undermine (...
